Book Review; Miss Fellingham's Rebellion

Miss Fellingham's Rebellion by Lynn Messina
Published: June 14, 2014
Thanks to Net Galley for providing me with this book to read and review.

Publisher Says...

Twenty-four-year-old Catherine Fellingham keeps a low profile—in society and in her family. A practical young woman, she leaves the spotlight to her beautiful younger sister and prefers quiet pursuits such as reading. But all that changes the moment she learns of her mother’s very excellent scheme to keep the family out of debtors’ prison. The scatter-brained Lady Fellingham has been selling commissions in the king’s army, and Catherine must shake off her indifference in order to save her family from a potentially ruinous scandal. Lady Arabella, her mother’s partner-in-crime, readily agrees to abandon the plan but only because she finds a more absorbing project: nabbing a husband for Catherine.

Catherine pays no head to her ladyship’s lavish claim that she’ll have her engaged by the end of the season, but that’s before she overhears Arabella instructing the handsome nonpareil, the Marquess of Deverill, to flirt outrageously with her and bring her into fashion. Mortified, Catherine resolves not to be taken in by the charming marquess's cruel game—and even implements a very excellent scheme of her own. This sensible young lady seems to have everything well in hand. Or is she about to learn that her heart is a great deal less practical than her head?

My thoughts...

I really enjoyed this novel. The characters were perfect in their imperfections and the storyline was cute and entertaining. If you're looking for a fun, well-written romance I would definitely suggest trying to get your hands on this one. I don't think you'll be disappointed!

Not a summer blogger...

Apparently I am not a summer blogger. I keep just randomly disappearing! I have lots of ideas for posts but I can't seem to find the time to sit down at the laptop and actually type them out. There's lots of social stuff going on, plus work is still crazy busy and only getting worse. Today was my day off and I thought about blogging but instead I went to visit a friend and her brand new baby boy (he is less than 2 weeks old and is absolutely precious!) and then stopped in to visit with my mom for a bit. J is on his way home from work now and I think we'll spend the evening relaxing on the deck or taking Daisy for a walk. At some point I'll get back in to a blogging routine. For now I'm just going to enjoy the summer.

See you soon!

Grateful for my Husband

On Friday J and I will celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary.

Five years seems crazy, I don't know where the time has gone.

We're heading camping this weekend to celebrate. For our first couple anniversaries we went to a nice restaurant downtown, but last year we decided to get away from the city and away from our cell phones and the TV and spend some time together, just us. It was amazing. It was easily one of my favourite memories of our marriage. We relaxed. We walked. We laid on the beach. We sat by the fire. And we talked. We talked a lot. More than we had talked in months. It was our own personal marriage retreat, and we needed it. We came back home feeling closer and more in love than ever. I'm so excited to be able to do the same thing again this year.

I am so thankful to have had this man by side. We've gone through some ups and downs, but I have never doubted his love for me or mine for him. We have grown so much together, and I really can't wait to see what the next five years bring.

C'est la Vie

Don't you hate it when work gets in the way of blogging?

I'm a department manager for a grocery store so for the most part it's not really a high-stress job. It is however sometimes exhausting, sometimes challenging, sometimes frustrating, and sometimes I feel like a chicken with my head cut off. This has been one of those weeks. I put in a few long days and when I came home all I wanted to do was go to bed. (I was actually in bed well before 9pm the past two nights.)

I'm off today and I had planned on getting a few posts done up but then I looked around my house. Total disaster zone. We're going away camping next weekend and J's cousin is coming to stay at our place to look after Daisy and Sydney so I couldn't just let it go another week. (As much as I wanted to!) So I opened all the windows and got to work.

I've been pretty productive so far, but I figure I better keep going while I'm on a roll and feeling motivated. I'm having a little diet coke break right now so I thought I'd pop in, say hi, and let you all know I'm not dead before I got back to work.

Have a fantastic weekend!

What a Waste!

Something happened today that I'm not proud of.

We overspent a little last month when we were on vacation, so we're trying to get back on track this month by being super careful about every dollar we spend. I decided to go through the freezer to see if there was anything that I could use for suppers this week so we could save some money on groceries.

Instead of saving money, I found myself throwing it away.

We filled close to two garbage bags with outdated food. Not just slightly outdated - I threw away a frozen pork tenderloin from 2012, and frozen dinners from 2011. Seriously. Plus I found four bags of french fries (how many bags of fries do two people need?) and several bags of frozen vegetables plus frozen fish that I didn't realize I had. And frozen fruit. You would not believe the frozen fruit in my freezer! Five or six bags. (Smoothies for breakfast for the next month I think.)

I did come up with three meals for the week comprised almost entirely of stuff already in my cupboards and freezer but I am so disappointed with myself. It would be one thing if it was the first time this happened, but it wasn't! Financially we do okay, but we certainly don't make enough to throw money away on groceries.

I now have a small whiteboard with a list of all of the items in both of our freezers. Even though I'm almost embarassed about the whole thing, I'm hoping that by posting here I'll hold myself accountable and never, ever wind up throwing away hundreds of dollars worth of groceries again.

Book Review; "The Lincoln Myth" by Steve Berry

The Lincoln Myth by Steve Berry (May 2014)

Goodreads says...

All it takes is a phone call from his former boss in Washington, and suddenly the ex-agent is racing to rescue an informant carrying critical intelligence. It’s just the kind of perilous business that Malone has been trying to leave behind, ever since he retired from the Justice Department. But once he draws enemy blood, Malone is plunged into a deadly conflict—a constitutional war secretly set in motion more than two hundred years ago by America’s Founding Fathers.

From the streets of Copenhagen to the catacombs of Salzburg to the rugged mountains of Utah, the grim specter of the Civil War looms as a dangerous conspiracy gathers power. Malone risks life, liberty, and his greatest love in a race for the truth about Abraham Lincoln—while the fate of the United States of America hangs in the balance.

My thoughts...

J and I both really enjoy Steve Berry's Cotton Malone series. (We both read The Charlemagne Pursuit when we were stuck in Newfoundland during Hurricane Igor.) He's actually one of the authors that got J into reading. Growing up he was never a big reader, but since I really enjoy relaxing with a good book he decided to give it another try.

Unfortunately, we were both a little bit disappointed by The Lincoln Myth. I found it hard to get into, and a little confusing in parts. The books in the Cotton Malone series all revolve around some sort of conspiracy, and I found this one a little bit too far-fetched for me. That being said, the book was suspenseful and I enjoy the characters of Cotton, President Daniels, and Stephanie Nelle. Even though I found this one a bit of a let-down, I'll still be picking up Cotton Malone's next adventure, The Patriot Threat when it comes out in March.

July Goals

I just realized I never got around to posting my July goals! I've had this post half-done sitting as a draft for almost two weeks. Ooops!

July Goals 2014

1. Take my lunch to work at least three times a week. I managed to handle twice a week last month, so we're going to try for three this month. This is something I really need to do for my waistline and my wallet.

2. Try out four new recipes. I love barbecue season because J does all the barbecuing which means I don't have to do as much of the cooking. It makes me a bit lazy though, and it's not really fair to him, so hopefully if I'm thinking about trying new recipes I'll be more inclined to cook more dinners myself.

3. Try out a new (non-chain) restaurant/or eat from a food truck. This is probably going to be one of my goals every month. I really want to experience more of what Halifax has to offer in this area.

4. Take Daisy to the park. It's been so hot and humid that we haven't wanted to take Daisy too far or for any really long walks but we should be taking advantage of the fact that it's cooler in the evenings and staying light well after 8pm.

Daisy loves going to the park!
5. Set a house hold budget. J and I have talked about doing this a number of times, but we never seem to sit down and actually do it. I really think we need to though. We make enough money to easily cover our bills but most months we're struggling to pay everything because we've spent so much money on random things.

6. Save some money. Self-explanatory. And one that will show up every month.

7. Blog at least four times a week. This is another one that I think you'll find on my list every month. I want to  make blogging a habit and I think this is the best way to do that. I think if I made my goal to blog every day I'd either get discouraged or post a lot of crap. (Not that I post a lot of deep stuff as it is, but quality is somewhat important to me.)

Since July is the 7th month I'm going to go with 7 goals for this month. :-)

Do you set monthly goals? Do you find it helpful or do you get discouraged when you don't complete all your goals?

Summer Lovin' Tag

The lovely Brittany tagged me in a Summer Lovin' tag yesterday so here I am! :-)

1. Summer lipstick you're loving? I don't actually wear lipstick. I'm more of a gloss person and I haven't even been wearing a lot of that lately. Now I want to go buy something new in a fun, summer shade though!

2. Summer nail polish you're loving? I've got two, neither are super expensive brands or anything, I just really like how they look. The first is Blazed by Wet 'n Wild and the second is Mintilicious by Rimmel. (I love the colour of the Rimmel one, but I don't like the brush so I've only worn it a couple times.)

3. Bathing suit you're loving this summer? I didn't get a new suit this summer because I got a new one close to the end of the season last year. (I don't wear one all that often.) It's pretty cute I guess - 2 piece with a black "skirt" and white and black patterned top.

4. Favourite summer Frappuccino from Starbucks? I can't remember the last time I was in Starbucks, I'm more of a Second Cup/Tim Horton's kind of girl. I love Second Cup's Frozen Hot Chocolate and I love Tim Horton's Frozen Raspberry Lemonade.

5. Favourite fake tan? Don't use them. I've got a pretty fabulous farmer's tan going on right now...

6. Favourite summer song? I'm loving "Don't Kill the Magic" by Magic.

7. Favourite summer accessory? I love sunglasses. Especially big, fun sunglasses.

8. Favourite summer fragrance/perfume? I don't wear a lot of scented products, but I picked up Bath & Body Works' Oahu Coconut Sunset fragrance mist a couple months ago and I love it. It's light and summery.

9. Summer book you're loving? I just finished City of Heavenly Fire (Book 6 of the Mortal Instruments Series) by Cassandra Clare and I really enjoyed it. I'm reading Prodigy by Marie Lu right now. It's been out for a while but I had never heard of it. It's the third book in a series - I just started the first book on Sunday - and I'm devouring it.

10. What are you most excited to do this summer? Just spend some time relaxing by the pool and taking Daisy on some hikes.

I'm not going to tag anyone in particular, but I'd love to know what you're all loving this summer!

Sara vs. Spraypaint

As soon as I saw Kimberly and Aubrey's "What Would You Do?" link-up prompt for today I knew that it was finally time to share my experience with spraypaint...

http://www.aubreyzaruba.com

Shortly after we got married J's grandparents downsized to a smaller apartment. They had a large, metal filing cabinet that they gave to us. It was not the prettiest looking filing cabinet, but we stuck it in the storage room of our apartment and used it to store all of our important paper work in it. When we moved in to our house we put it in the office and basically forgot about it.

Earlier this year my parents gave us some leftover laminate flooring they had. It was just enough to do the office. So we decided to give the office a bit of a make-over. We don't use the office very often (we rarely use our desktop, pretty much everything we do is on the laptop or the tablet) but it was a small room so we figured it was a good place to start our home make-over. I decided the ugly filing cabinet wouldn't fit in with the new look in the office so I decided to spray paint it.

Since it was March (and super cold!), and the room we were working in had no flooring and was being repainted I decided it was safe to do the spray painting inside.

Not my brightest moment.

We were about half-way through when I realized that my nose felt kind of funny so I went to the bathroom to check it out. It was then that I discovered a) I should have been wearing a mask because the inside of my nose was red like my filing cabinet and b) spray paint travels REALLY well and I now had pink carpet outside the office as well as pink tiles/sink/toilet in the bathroom. (Apparently opening the window and leaving the office door open was a good idea for air quality but not a good idea for keeping the paint contained.)

Yup, that really happened.

Three months later the carpet on the landing is still pink (less pink, but still very very noticable) but I have a beautiful red filing cabinet.

Lesson learned.

Have you ever had a DIY project go horribly wrong?

Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo

A couple of weeks ago my boss mentioned that he had some tickets for the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo to give away and asked if I was interested. J and I have been to the Tattoo a couple times and have always really enjoyed ourselves. I was able to get four tickets for the show on Saturday afternoon so J and I decided to take my parents.

We had a delicious lunch at new restaurant downtown (try the lobster mac and cheese if you're ever at The Foggy Goggle) and then headed to the Metro Centre for the show.

The Tattoo is... Well, hard to explain for starters! It features all kinds of military bands and different display teams. (According to Wikipedia it's inspired by "military tattoos" but I don't really know what they are so that's not particularly helpful.) It happens every summer in Halifax and features performers from around the world. The majority of the performances are military based (there's also a strong RCMP prescence) but some are civillian performers. There are dancers, acrobats, bands, historic re-enactments... All kinds of different performances.

If you're ever in Halifax during the first week of July it's definitely something I recommend checking out!

The opening.

A tribute to three RCMP officers recently killed in the line of duty. (I bawled.)

This little guys came from Denmark. They were fantastic!

This was the best performance of the night. So much precision!

These two pictures are from a tribute to soldiers killed in Afghanistan. (I cried again...)

I love highland dancing. I hope some day I have a daughter who's interested in trying.

The muscles on this boys... Whoa.

Everybody marches back in for the finale. It's awesome to watch.

Sorry for all the pictures, I just couldn't narrow it down anymore!

Have a fantastic Tuesday. :-)

Grateful for Mom & Dad

One of the reasons we bought our house was that it's less than a ten minute drive from my parents. (Some people would consider it walking distance, but I am not one of those people.) The older I've gotten the closer I've gotten to both of my parents. Growing up I always considered myself a "daddy's girl," and I definitely still am to some extent, but the older I get the more I rely on my mom.

Aren't my folks super cute? This was taken on their most recent trip to Cuba.

I got to spend a fair bit of time with my parents this past week (we actually just got home from having supper with them!) and it got me thinking about how fortunate I am to not only still have both of my parents, but to live close to them and have a great relationship with them. That's what I am really feeling grateful for today - what about you?

Accidentally on Purpose

I didn't plan on taking a week long blogging vacation. I actually had big plans on Wednesday to do up a whole bunch of posts in advance in case life got a little hectic. I grabbed Daisy and headed over to my parents' place around 11am so that we could spend the day lounging by the pool. I packed up my laptop and everything. But, for some reason I couldn't get my laptop to connect to the wi-fi so I ended up spending my day like this:

And it was fabulous.

Then after Wednesday work was crazy busy, and life was crazy busy, and I just didn't have a chance to sit down and do the blogging I had planned. I'm going to try and get a couple things written tonight, but until things get back to normal at work (we're short staffed currently) my blogging may be more sporadic than I would like.

Hope everyone had a great Canada Day and a great July 4th!

June Goals; Recap

I think I actually did a little better with my goals this month!

1. Take my lunch to work at least twice a week. DONE! I actually managed to do two days a week of bagged lunches. Well, I didn't the week we were on vacation but we had three picnic lunches while we were off, so I'm going to count that too.

2. Try out at least two new recipes. NOT DONE. This wasn't a good month for cooking. I'm just going to leave it at that and try again in July.

3. Bake something. DONE! I baked two cakes this month. I baked a lemon cake with blueberry frosting and blueberry filling and I baked a chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting. Neither of them were from scratch, but it's a start.

4. Get some new pictures of J and I that aren't selfies. DONE! Done, but not as many pictures as I had hoped for. I took lots of pictures of other people, but didn't get them to take a lot of shots of us.

5. Go on two dates with J.  DONE! I couldn't decide if this was done or not done to be honest. We went to two movies while we were on vacation, we also spent a couple days together just the two of us. Neither of those were exactly what I had in mind, but my goal was really to spend one-on-one quality time with J so I'm going to go ahead and say this one was done too.

6. Try out a new (non-chain!) restaurant. DONE! (Technically.) J and I tried out a new pub when we spent the day in Lunenburg when we were on vacation. It's not exactly what I meant when I made it one of my goals though, I wanted to try some where downtown. Halifax is becoming a bit of a foodie town, and there are tons of neat restaurants.

7. Take Daisy to the park at least four times. NOT DONE. We only took Daisy to the park twice this month, both times while we were on vacation. Hopefully the weather will be better in July, and hopefully work will slow down for both of us.

8. Watch at least one movie in the theatre and one at home. DONE. We actually saw two movies in the theatre. We saw Chef and X-Men and I really enjoyed both of them. They were both very good, but in very different ways. And we watched 21 Jump Street on Netflix. I didn't know if I would enjoy it or not, but I definitely laughed out loud a couple times. I think we might try to see 22 Jump Street before it's out of the theatre.

9. Save some money! NOT DONE. So very not done. Even staying home we spent a lot while we were on vacation. We didn't break the bank, but we definitely didn't set anything aside either.

10. Blog at least four times a week. NOT DONE. But super close. One week I only blogged three times, but every other week I blogged more than four. I didn't get any new bloglovin' followers either, and that was sort of a side goal. I know it's not all about followers but it would still be nice to see that number increase.

I'm still working on fine-tuning my goals for July, they'll probably be up on Wednesday.

Have a great week!

Lemon Cake with Blueberry Frosting

For my mother-in-law's birthday every year we go out for Chinese food and then come back to my place for cake and ice cream. (And by every year I mean for the last two years.) This year I decided I wanted to do something a little fancier so I spent some time scouring Pinterest for something that didn't sound too difficult, but looked pretty.

I eventually stumbled on this Betty Crocker recipe for Lemon Cake with Raspberry Mousse that I thought I could handle. Layer cakes make me nervous - when J and I were first married I attempted to make a layer cake for his birthday and it ended up being the ugliest cake ever - but I decided it was time to face my fears.

And I'm glad I did! I went with blueberry instead of raspberry which worked really well with the lemon cake. The cake ended up looking good (okay, good is a stretch, but it didn't look too bad!) and it was tasty.

In case you want to try it yourself, here's the recipe:

Lemon Cake with Blueberry Mousse
Adapted from this Betty Crocker recipe.

Ingredients:
  • 1 box of lemon cake mix (I used Betty Crocker)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon grated lemon peel
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 cups blueberry pie filling (I used Compliments by Sobeys)
  • 1 1/2 cups whipping cream
Directions:
  1. Pre-heat your oven to 350°F (Or 325° for dark or non-stick pans)
  2. Spray (or grease) two 8-inch round cake pans
  3. In large bowl beat cake mix, buttermilk, oil, lemon peel and eggs with electric mixer. Beat on low for about 30 seconds then on medium for 1-2 minutes. Make sure to scrape the sides of the bowl occasionally.
  4. Pour cake evenly into pans and bake as directed on the box.
  5. Cool cakes in pans for 10 to 15 minutes then remove from pans to cooling racks. Cool cakes completely before frosting. (This is super important.)
  6. Place one cake layer (rounded side down) on a serving plate then spread 3/4 cup of the pie filling over cake layer to within 1/4 inch of edge. Top with the second layer, rounded side up this time.
  7. In chilled medium bowl, beat whipping cream with electric mixer on high speed until soft peaks form. (I worried I wouldn't be able to tell when it was the right consistency, but it was pretty obvious.) Beat in the remaining 1 1/4 cups pie filling on low speed just until blended. (I actually used a bit more of the pie filling since there was some left in the can, just to give it more of a blueberry flavour.)
  8. Frost side and top of cake with blueberry mousse.
If you're not sure how to frost the cake (and I wasn't) check out this Youtube video:

Let me know if you try it out!

Wife 2 Wife; All in the Details

I decided it would be fun to link up with Kelly and Cheltee for their Wife 2 Wife link-up this month. Today's topic is our favourite detail from our wedding. I couldn't pick just one, so I picked two.

The first detail I picked was my flowers. We used a lady who worked out of her home for our flowers. (She no longers does wedding flowers or I would definitely be sharing her website with you!) I told her I loved gerbera daisies, the colour pink, and gave her ribbon that matched our colours. Dad picked up the flowers and brought them to my aunt's house where I was getting ready with my bridesmaids. When I opened the boxes I was absolutely blown away. I was so impressed with the flowers. Flowers weren't that important to me, but looking back now they are definitely one of my favourite details.

My other favourite detail was my veil. It was actually my mom's veil that she altered herself to be more like what I was looking for. I loved knowing I was wearing the same veil she had, and I loved how beautiful it was. And it was so different from what I was seeing in all the bridal shops. Originally I hadn't been planning on wearing mom's veil because it had kind of a weird hair piece attached but when she offered to alter it I was thrilled.

I can't believe I'll have been married for 5 years next month!

NHL Awards - My Thoughts

If you had told me a year ago that I would be writing a post about the NHL Awards I would have thought you were crazy. And not just because I didn't have this blog a year ago. This past season I found myself getting more into hockey than I ever have. I don't know if it's because I'm older, or because J followed things a little more closely since his Avs were having an awesome season but whatever the case we watched a good chunk of the show last night.

Just a couple (pretty random and not necessarily hockey-related) thoughts on the show:

- I was really excited that Nathan MacKinnon won the Calder Memorial Trophy. He had a fantastic rookie year, plus he's a local kid. I definitely cheered when his name was called.

Nathan MacKinnon (Colorado)
{ Zimbio/Ethan Miller/Getty Images North America }

- I thought David Boreanaz did a really good job presenting. I follow him on Twitter and he's definitely a real hockey fan.

David Boreanaz with Jaime Bergman
{ Zimbio/Bruce Bennett/Getty Images North America }

- He may not have won the Vezina Trophy (and I do think Tukka Rask deserved it) but Semyon Varlamov was definitely the best-dressed nominee, and one of the best dressed players there.

Semyon Varlamov (Colarado)
 { Zimbio/Bruce Bennett/Getty Images North America }

- I loved seeing the clips about the nominees for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, King Clancy Memorial Trophy, and the Mark Messier Leadership Award. It's wonderful to see these guys giving back.

Did anyone else watch? How did your favourites do?

Book Review; The One by Kiera Cass

The One by Kiera Cass (May 2014)

Goodreads says...

For the four girls who remain at the palace, the friendships they’ve formed, rivalries they’ve struggled with and dangers they’ve faced have bound them to each other for the rest of their lives.

Now, the time has come for one winner to be chosen.

America never dreamed she would find herself anywhere close to the crown – or to Prince Maxon’s heart. But as the competition approaches its end and the threats outside the palace walls grow more vicious, America realises just how much she stands to lose – and how hard she’ll have to fight for the future she wants.

The breathtaking finale to THE SELECTION trilogy will make you swoon!

My thoughts...

The One was the final installment in Kiera Cass' "The Selection" trilogy. I re-read the first two books prior to starting this one because that's what I like to do with series. (Is that weird?) As a whole, I enjoyed the trilogy. I mean, who doesn't want the chance to be a princess? I really liked the America's character and her relationship with Maxon, and I felt like Cass did a lot with some of the other characters as well.

I cried more than once reading The One, but it definitely wasn't my favourite book of the three. There were a few things at the end that felt like they were added in for more drama as opposed to be relevant to the plot line. (I wish I could explain that further, but I still think it was a great book and I want you to read it so spoilers would be kind of rude.)

I think one of the true marks of a good book is wanting to know what happens after you finish the last page. I don't think that tying up every single loose end is always the right way to finish a series. I want to know what happens next. This book left me with questions at the end, and I like that.

If you're not burnt out from all the other YA trilogies floating around, I definitely recommend giving this series a try.

Grateful for In-Laws

Ember Grey.

This week J and I spent a lot of time with his family since his sister was home visiting for the first time in over a year. My relationship with my mother-in-law got off to a rocky start, but this week reminded me of how thankful I am that we have a good relationship now. I don't think I'll ever be as close with her as I am with my own mother, but I think that's pretty normal.

I am very fortunate to have married into this family. J's brothers and sister are all really wonderful (and really different!) people. There is so much laughter when the whole family gets together, and hours pass without anyone realizing it because the conversation flows so easily.

I have friends who don't speak to their spouse's parents or siblings, or who have very strained relationships with them. You hear so many "in-law" horror stories, but that hasn't been my experience at all. I am so grateful that it's as easy to spend time with J's family as it is to spend time with my family. (Though the conversations are pretty different!)

{ Photo by Tammy Orr }
For both mom's this year we arranged family portraits as a mother's day gift. On Friday night we did our shoot with J's family. Four of his six siblings were able to be here, along with their significant others. (Two married couples and two engaged couples.) We used the photographer J and I always use and we had a fantastic time. It was probably one of the best parts of our vacation.

Have a great week, and remember to take a moment to remember something you're grateful for. :-)
